Lysergic scum was a short-lived project borne of Darren Wyndgarde's diseased mind. You'll know DW as Filthy Turd and from the numerous other Cave-Borne noise monstrosities he has found himself involved with.

Lyseric Scum play what is now generally regarded as HNW, although at the time we just called it noise. I don't recall DW ever specifically identifying himself with this movement, but he has been taken into it's rotten bosom.

One take. Gritty, terrible and long. You'll love it, I'm sure.

The first in a series of post of (mostly early) VCO stuff. Rather than try and wax eloquent on the virtues of the VCO sound-world, I'll excerpt reviews and interviews that may explain and inform your listening experience.

Here's an excerpt from an interview with Mick Flowers from 2008. Read the full thing here.

MC: Your music has been at times compared with Indian ragas. Do have any particular fascination with Indian Classical? Do you see your own sounds as generating from or seeking to reach for the same point?

MF: Hmm...Well I suppose there's a similarity between what I play and Indian ragas insofar as I use an electronic tampura box, there are no chord changes etc. I do listen to Indian classical and folk music but no way would I say what I do is anything near the level of Indian classical music (more on the folk music side of things) I suppose I'm just jamming my own versions of ragas, hopefully there's a similar purity there although a more naive/ham-fisted one in the music I play. When I was a teenager we used to listen to the Velvet Undergound, Indian classical, flute music of Papau New Guinea, primitive blues. I guess all the music I make is vaguely informed by that period. The VU have the drone going on, I suppose that comes from John Cale and his time playing with the Theatre of Eternal Music - I'm not sure whether Lamonte Young studied with Pandit Pran Nath before or after John Cale's time though, maybe there's a connection there.

MC: Does Vibracathedral Orchestra have a formula for creating music or does each project come together in a completely different way?

MF: The VCO is one long project I suppose, we play on a regular basis and record everything we do and we go through the tapes every once in a while and edit. Maybe that's why each release sounds a little different, each is a document of a particular period made unique by the instruments we used at that time etc. The instruments have changed a little over the years. We use fewer acoustic instruments and more amplified instruments and electronics. Things are quiet at the moment for VCO. I think we're going to change our MO in the next few months, try different ways of working. At the end of last year and the beginning of this year we only really played shows, some were big festivals in Europe. I'd like to go back to playing for ourselves for a while and exploring new ways of recording, getting more in touch with the spirit of the music. I've been going through our recordings over the past couple of months, there's some exciting stuff in the vaults and we'll have a few new releases out there pretty soon. We'd love to come to the states again but it's hard arranging long overseas trips with everyone's commitments outside the band.

Mad Staff Jensen, contributing member of Origami Replika and owner/operator of Some Place Else (I think) is Clop Neplat. This self-titled 2Lp is one record originals; another, remixes from the likes of Lasse Marhaug (I don't know the other names).

The material reminds me a lot of Zone Nord but with a cold, IDM flare that may attract some. Also, I can hook you up with a copy of this for cheap, if you're interested.

The title of this is slightly misleading, as it's mostly instrumental. There are, however, some excellent yodeling cuts here. Skip ahead to "Am Wetterstoa" (there was a skip on this track that I couldn't get rid of) and you'll see what I mean.

The songs by Lolita und die Moosbacher Volksmusik and die Geschwister Wurmer are great and worth your time.

The first in a series of LPs I'll be posting of Germanic folk music. This one is a collection of mostly Alpine folk music and is quite a pleasant collection with a nice "group" feel. Great yodeling from die Geschwister Krismer. Lots of accordion and zither.

The jewel on this collection is the "Kufsteinlied", which holds a special place in this blogger's heart, as I had the great pleasure of visiting this area of the world in January 2009. I wasn't able to go to Kufstein proper and, unfortunately I did spend most of my short visit sick in a hotel room. Nevertheless, I have many fond memories.

Since I'm not really a prog aficionado, I'll have to ask good 'ol allmusic.com for help/guidance.

"It's easy to forget that America and England didn't exist in a vacuum in the 1960's, and that rock's influence was felt far beyond the English-speaking world. France, Italy, Germany, and much of the rest of Europe spawned their own groups emulating the sounds of psychedelia and other cultural exports from the USA and the UK. Le Orme were part of this phenomenon, a quintet formed in Italy in the late 1960's, who cut two albums of psychedelic rock for the Lord label in Milan. Aldo Tagliapietra (vocals, acoustic guitar, flute, celesta),Nino Smeraldi (electric guitar, vocals), Claudio Galieti (bass, cello, vocals), Toni Pagliuca (keyboards), and Michi dei Rossi (drums, percussion) started out sounding something like the Beatles circa theMagical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine albums, complete with distorted lead guitar solos and song intended to evoke the variant states of mind associated with certain recreational drug use. Smeraldi, who co-wrote (with Tagliapietra) all of the songs on their first album, also arranged all of their material. The group stayed together during the 1970's, by which time they'd evolved into an Emerson, Lake and Palmer-type progressive rock band, cutting four albums in that vein." by Bruce Eder

The second (?) in a series documenting young experimental artists working in Berlin. Unsurprisingly, I've not heard of any of these names, but I suppose that that's the point. Each artist approaches "strings" in a different fashion: some use stringed instruments as source material, some as main instruments, others as an element of a larger process. In any case, the main watchword here, as is the case in most contemporary experimentation, DECONSTRUCTION.

I love the sound on this single. Such a nice grainy direct-to-tape sound, which is not often heard in noise these days.

Harsh noise with P.E. leanings here. Grunt is the shining star on this single. Two tracks of rhythmic, structured noise with great atmosphere. Hermit offers more of what you'd expect: dirty Japanese-influenced, nihilistic Harsh Noise. This was ripped from the second edition, in case it matters to you.

A souvenir for me, really. I bought it a few years ago at a great store in Heidelberg. Worth checking out if you're ever in the area. Actually, Heidelberg was good for vinyl.

This is mid-80s weirdo rock. Shares little with NDW and such like, but is worth a spin. Features contributions, however significant, I'll never know, from Jello Biafra. If you care. And I think you do.

Alastair Galbraith - Rivulets 7" (1999)

Alastair is an experimental songster from New Zealand. That's it really.

His output is varied, but in general, represents a bastard child of the American lo-fi aesthetic as espoused by groups like Sebadoh/Sentridoh/etc and Eric's Trip (yes, I know they are Canadian) and the NWW school of head-scratch field recording/art brut/collage weirdity.

The new "songs" here ended up an a full length album which came out some time after this single, and the accompanying "pieces" come off as toss-away experiments, though not without some charm. Consider it a kind of intro sampler. I did.

K2 - Renal Ekonomix 7" (1996)

K2, recently inactive, is in my oh-so humble opinion, one of the under-appreciated Japanese noise artists. Merzbow and Massonna have been tremendously influential, but K2 has gotten kind of left behind. So, in an effort to rectify this, here's a picture disc 7". Great junk noise. Very focused and precise.

Thrones - The Suckling b/w Young Savage 7" (1995)

Here's Joe Preston's goofy-Doom solo gig Thrones. This was their debut 7", released on the venerable Kill Rock Stars label more than a decade ago.

For those of you readers who are unfamiliar with Joe Preston's other work, his previous musical connections will clarify the Thrones sound: Earth, Melvins, Witchypoo, uh, some other bands I can't remember. Okay, I guess that doesn't help. Just download and enjoy it.

This and his numerous other singles have been collected on a Southern Lord released album, so go buy that if you are interested.

Napalmed / Hermit - Split 7" (1997)

Napalmed are a Czech sometimes-group headed by Radek Kopel, who is still active under the Napalmed pseudonym. On this single Naplamed plays junk noise. Starts with a flute sample and moves on to what sounds like a jam session edited down, which lends the track a cut up and varied feel.

Hermit, aka Eric Boros, plays Harsh Noise in the Japanese style. Not much to say really, other than it's a great little single. Opens with a sample and throws itself head-long into contact mic abuse and vocal-noise

Mauricio Kagel & Karlheinz Stockhausen - Transicion II / Zyklus / Refrain LP

Not the usual thing for me. I picked this up cheap, as it's not in the greatest shape, so bear than in mind while listening.

I feel it's of interest as Stockhausen isn't really well known for his percussion pieces. It's an earlier piece so it shares some of the chippy-choppy style for his tape work, so there should be much on this to enjoy.

Not being well versed in Stockhausen or Kagel, I can't offer much in the way of explanation or insight here, so, as in the past, I'll let the sounds explain themselves. I suppose Stockhausen would have like it that way.

Ma Cherie for Painting - Pirates of Trash 7" (2000)

I bought this on spec and, as it turned out, it was an excellent cho ice. That being said, I still know very little about it (him?), so instead of inferring various things from the Discogs listing, instead I'll concentrate on the sounds.

The a-side track has a kind of lo-fi post-minimal synth vibe, which I like. Very homemade and ramshackle in a charming way. The b-side made not much of an impression on me, other than it was pleasant, but not especially memorable. It's a remix by Piano Magic, who I remember from an underwhelming collaboration with Low. But don't let that sour you to the whole affair.

Tag Team is the brainchild of Crosstalk International's Phillip Hertz, in collaboration with indie music heavyweight Steve Fisk.

Discogs.com tells me that the a side is primarily a sample from Canadian surfrock legends Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet with added vocal elements and the b side is an instrumental version of the same track.

A strange, if somewhat forgettable, footnote in the world of early 90s singles.

E.A.R. - Data Rape (Part 9) 7" (Earworm, 1999)

Sonic Boom (from Spacemen 3, of course) presents another in a long-ish series of pieces for various circuit-bent, home-made and specially made synths. Sounds like you'd expect, and considering the omni-presence of circuit bending in the underground music scene, this comes off as a bit a-typical, but remember that SB was in on the ground floor of this and was doing this sort of stuff way before it was old hat. Of course that doesn't really improve the sounds as such, but gives it some context and makes the ear a bit more forgiving, perhaps.

Manon Anne Gillis & GX Jupitter-Larsen - Encored Dust 7" (Noisopoly, 2000)

Fantastic collaboration by French experimentalist Manon Anne Gillis (you can find more by her at the wonderful Mutant Sounds blog) and GX Jupitter-Larsen (main man behind The Haters and Canadian).

The discogs listing tells us that "both tracks are featured as two distinct pieces interlaced together as double parallel grooves on both sides of the record." So what you get is Gillis and Jupitter-Larsen in even mix and they compliment each other well.

Aki Tsuyuko - Ongakushitsu CD (Moikai, 2000)

First released on Nobukazu Takemura's Childisc, then re-issued on the Jim O'Rourke curated Moikai, "Ongakushitsu" is a fragile, airy piece of brain-fry, if that makes sense. NDM, maybe? (Naive Dance Music). Except, I can't imagine humans dancing to this, maybe strange alien plant life or abstract shapes, but not humans.

At once strange and unsettling, and dark and weird. Like the little tree creatures in Pricess Mononoke that make that rattle sound. Y'know?

Andrew Deutsch - Lung Cleaner CD T

"I created Lung Cleaner for Eric Lanzillotta when he was sick with a serious lung infection which lasted for months. I hoped to help him recover by imagining a "sonic cure", an "art pill". The work continued after his illness and the notion of using metaphor as a compositional starting point has, at this time, formed the basis for all my sonic research and composition.

Some other points of departure:
Digital structuralism, modular systemic processing, solitary parameter based interactive performance, image drones, contextual music, glaze/kiln music, analog/digital hybrids, granular synthesis, headphones, time grafting, modular synthesis, micro tonal clusters, moment clusters, destructive improvisational editing, rate of change patterns, logarithmic processing, filters, time sweeps, restricted randomization patterns, Iannis Xenakis, Merzbow, John Cage, and Gyorgy Ligeti.

Source materials included: wine glasses, baby toys, pure tones, bells, music boxes, gears, water, etc...track 2: "Dizzy From the Cold Meds" contains samples of 3 unpublished early electronic works by Pauline Oliveros dating from around 1966."

Carl Michael von Hausswolf - A Lecture on Disturbances in Architecture CD (2002)

A Lecture on Disturbances in Architecture is presented as "an intellectual platform for further discussions" on the topic of "looking at architectural space through the medium of sound" (according to the press release). An actual lecture this is not; instead, Carl Michael von Hausswolff gives listeners seven sound art pieces masquerading as illustrations for an academic presentation -- in fact, a survey of his installation and sound art between 1997 and 2002. An excerpt from a recorded and released lecture by R. Buckminster Fuller (in other words, a snippet of what this album disguises itself as) works as an anti-introduction. "The Importance of Good Heating in Colder Climates" consists of thick grey noise -- listeners can guess it could be the magnified sound of a gas heater. After a minute of a painful high-pitched tone ("The Small Unnoticed Room," related topic: uselessness) come three variations on frequencies. One of them, "Why Similar Aesthetics Collide," lets two closely pitched sine waves flap against each other. "Illustration of High Ceilings Inhabited by Angels" (hmm, what could he be referring to?) consists of a long, soft ambient piece, very aerial, as one could have guessed. "When Thick Walls Seem Vanished" is the most interesting work here: Listeners hear huge, echoing knocks over a track of white noise -- like checking a wall for the presence of a beam in very slow motion. Humor factor aside, these pieces are meant to be (and better) experienced separately on loudspeakers. Minimal in constituents and movement but not necessarily minimalist, this album puts the listener in the middle of a room and plays tricks on his or her ears. Not as gripping or immersive as some of Hausswolff's previous discs, but on the other hand it adds a witty conceptual dimension. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide

The Intelligence - Boredom and Terror

Seattleite Lars Finberg might be better known as the drummer of the A-Frames. Or, if you’re from Seattle but don’t pay attention to quality music, you might know him as "that guy who used to work at Cellophane Square." Hopefully you know him for the first reason and not the latter. The Intelligence always seemed like the area’s best-kept secret, even as the A-Frames were garnering more attention, but that was fine — it just made the rest of us who knew of them seem cooler by comparison. Now? No one’s cool anymore; sorry.

2005’s In The Red-backed Icky Baby did a lot to get The Intelligence’s name out there. It also saw Finberg’s ’solo’ project flesh out into a fully realized band as he was joined by Factums’ drummer Matthew Ford and two members, Lee Reader and Nicholas Brawley, of the recently (at the time) broken-up Popular Shapes. While The Intelligence have been hanging around since 2000 with more changes in line-up than you might think, we get the stripped-down version on this release, which is Finberg, a guitar, drums, keyboards and a drum machine.

Over Boredom and Terror’s brief 26 minutes there is enough variation to keep things fresh. But who really needs variation when you’re doing something so perfectly? The drum machine and keyboard tandem of "Spellers and Counters" is an absolute gem. There’s also the outright pop of the lively "Weekends in Jail," which features the most fleshed-out sound, and all without keyboards. "Telephone Wires" is the other more conventional sounding rocker, with more catchy guitar chords and a memorable chorus. Matter of fact, nearly every song on here has a great hook. They’re great without being saccharine or trying too hard, and the weight of that success is mostly attributed to Finberg’s delivery. For example, who knows what he’s saying on the driving "Guys"? It doesn’t matter; it’s how he’s saying it that does. That might sound like a page from Pinback’s playbook, but it’s a safe bet that these lyrics aren’t quite so oblique. They’re just random.

In a perfect world, this would be popular music. Really, I can’t think of many reasons why this band hasn’t caught on. The music is ridiculously catchy, upbeat, clever, and you could probably dance to it if you were so inclined. Okay, there are a few f-bombs thrown in here and there, most philosophically on "The World Is A Drag," where Finberg asks the timeless question "Who gives a fuck if the world is a drag?" Certainly not I. The only track preventing Boredom and Terror from being a perfect album is “The Night Belongs to Microphones.” It’s not a bad track — not at all — but it suffers from being surrounded by some amazing songs. This album was originally going to be released as a double CD, but someone at Omnibus convinced Lars to scale it back and stick to just one disc. The leftover material was issued as a bonus CD to be packaged along with the 12-inch version ofBoredom and Terror that Narnack later put out. If only they would’ve switched out “Microphones” with "Darling, That Was A Lie" from that disc, then daaaaaaamn. That’s all I’m sayin’. - Tiny Mixtapes

Andrew Chalk side project (sort of). More on the noise/industrial side of things, which you might have guessed considering this was released on the venerable Broken Flag.

Drone fiends never fear, though! You'll find much to enjoy on this tape, mostly on the first side. Lots of subtle synth line matched with field recordings, raw and effected alike. The second side, however, is more in line with the BF roster of the time: squeals and scrapes and general harshity. Good stuff.

While this doesn't totally fit in with this blog's regular stable of artists, the general weirdness of the this album, and it's general scarcity in North America make it well worth posting.

"Trans baffled many Neil Young fans. Some suggested that the album could be a satirical message that Young was trying to send about the direction music was headed in the future. A vocoder features prominently in five of the nine tracks. While the album was poorly received, some critics point out that the melodies are strong and that the album involves Young addressing new musical movements, as he did previously on Rust Never Sleeps and later with the grunge movement.

Neil Young found that when using a vocoder when communicating to his son (who was born with cerebral palsy), he was able to elicit a better response. The emotional power of this experiment shows in the lyrics, particularly in the track "Transformer Man" with the lines "So many things still left to do / But we haven't made it yet."" from Wikipedia.org

FDP represent an early chapter in the history of the New Blockaders, although the precise place they occupy in the TNB universe is entierly unclear to me. FDP play a mix of herky-jerky improv, electronic splutter, and other head-scratcher Dada-inspired tape collage pieces.

Here you'll find the last of the four Tyndall LPs on Sky Records, and, unfortunately, the least of the four as well. Nevertheless, it's worth your time. Each member of the duo contributes a side of writing. Krehan (who went on to record sub-par new age music as Nik Tyndall) contributes the "music-through-time" side, much of which smacks of Switched on Bach-ish chintziness, but has some charm, particularly the first two cuts. Langer's side has more punch, the stand out being "Karbon."

Much heavier on the drone side of things Kneale and Mattin have created an excellent piece of work. Fans of Mattin's microtonal work with Radu Malfatti (see below) will find much to enjoy here. Campbell Kneale fans will find this fits well with the drone oriented Black Boned Angel, though this is much less bombastic than the aforementioned project (those interested in BBA, should check out the Ashes 3 CDr set I posted a while back). "The Sky releases were no more than a stylistic intermezzo which ended abruptly with "Formen Letzter Hausmusik". This album mostly contains material recorded between 1968 to 1978. I always prepared in creating music beyond rhythm and harmony and so "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" and all albums since then continue my work of the 60's and 70's. Actually the Sky period was the experimental one, because I made music with synthesizers and rhythm boxes; which I never did before or after this time. This kind of rhythmic and harmonic music didn't really satisfy me, so I returned to my roots after approximately two years (1983). Just in time, I noticed that it is not my cup of tea to experiment with structures of pop music."

"This recording is made in summer 1998, and re-edited in 2000, using only the YAMAHA MU15 sound-module. I played the original MIDI data and I input the scale, harmony, and melody in advance.

However, I didn't use the typical method of replaying the sequence data. Instead, I did the SCRUB control change improvisation for MIDI data on my software. I had idea to do this from the frequent error of the MIDI signal when I'm making music.

I'm also very interested in the reaction of the MIDI equipment in the blackout and the earthquake. (In Kyoto, it happened very strongly). "In June 1982, I began a project to realize a pure tuning system for orchestral and chamber ensemble works. The tuning is a mirror reflection of the actual complex tones which make up the ideal, harmonic structure of the physical wave energy produced by a vibrating string. This system necessitated the design and construction of instruments which could be tuned directly to the exact intervals of the first seven octaves of the harmonic series (128 notes). This tuning makes it possible to determine and produce specific resultant (or differential) tones.

Compositional structures have been determined by the logical geometric symmetry of the harmonic series. The series is a natural phenomenon which exists as a physical manifestation of symmetry and form. The existence alone of this language as music seems to indicate music as reflection of the movement of its own sound waves - not as symbolic, but a literal expression of dynamic symmetry in time. Glenn Branca - Symphony N. 2 (The Peak of the Sacred) CD (1992)

Branca's bio describes The Peak of the Sacred thus:

"Branca's desire to work with a new sound he had developed caused him to design and build most of the instruments for the piece. Calling them "mallet guitars" he had created a dulcimer like instrument which when played resonated with a sustained fluid timbre.
Although the instruments used guitar strings and guitar pickups the only actual conventional guitar used in the piece was a bass. Luckily Branca's musicians were willing to learn how to play these "guitars" which sat on tables and were played with sticks. This was also one of the few pieces in which Branca also used tape electronics. Although the piece had a rich resonant sound it was difficult to capture in a recording, a problem that Branca has had throughout his career. A studio recording was never made and the only document that exists is a crude live recording."

The "crude live recording" was released by Atavistic and is presented here, and features Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth playing the mallet guitars and Z'ev on percussion.

you think of trolls dancing inside one of those filthy McDonalds play structures at one

Another self-released deal, this one for a US tour, she did a few years back. Each copy had an original cover, so I'm told.

"It's been well documented that something weird and wonderful is afoot in Finland, with legions of free folk experimenters emerging from the forests clutching recordings of handstiched psychedelia. Kuupuu is the work of Jonna Karanka, who has spent time in Avarus and The Anaksimandros, and her self-released solo outing Kulta Sulka is one of the many gems to hail from the Finnish scene. Her sound kaleidoscopes indicate a tenuous grip on the art of songwriting, often meandering into eerie loops of breathy
woodwinds trapped in cyclonic infinitude, or murky collages distorted with cheaply rendered,
sci-fi laser pings. Yet Karanka's dreamily cracked songs are her strenght, and they ache with the melancholy of the best acid folk chanteuses the 70s had to offer. No cover scans, I'm a afraid; you'll have to make due with a picture of Jonna, herself. Seems a bit rude considering the dearth of clear self-portraits on her own work. Still, it helps to focus the listener's attention a bit.

Jonna Karanka was one of the first people I ever asked to release a record for; she politely declined, which may have been for the best, however, I would have been, and would still be, very proud to have in my roster.

Jonna describes Kuupuu as "artly improvised spooky boogie with tapes, loops, toys, casios, effects and voices." She's been involved with various Finnish groups, including Avarus,
The Anaksimandros, Maniacs Dream, Kukkiva Poliisi, Lussu&Pami, Lussu ja Magneetti, Kermakolmio, Hertta Lussu Ässä, Thriller Bingo.

This was her debut self-released CDr.
